IEEE Santa Clara Valley CAS Chapter Distinguished Lecturer Presentation, May 2008
On May 19, 2008, at the National Semiconductor Auditorium in Sunnyvale, CA, the CAS Chapter along with the MTT and SSC Chapters sponsored a presentation by Distinguished Lecturer Naveen K. Yanduru, Design Manager at Texas Instruments, on “Achieving highly integrated, reconfigurable RF front-ends in deep sub-micron CMOS SAW filter in 90nm CMOS.” Because various RF bands, standards, modulation techniques, signal bandwidths and duplex mechanisms are needed for a mobile terminal, such specifications require a transceiver that is highly adaptable and reconfigurable.

In developing a RF receiver for software defined radio, solving the multiband programmability is the main difficulty. To illustrate the design challenges some architectures and their limitations were discussed. A WCDMA/EDGE receiver without inter-stage SAW filter in 90 nm digital CMOS was used as an example to illustrate the system, architecture, circuit and considerations for such a receiver. It was clear from the presentation that designing a multi mode RF receiver for a given RF band with highly reconfigurable performance is feasible.

The lecture was followed by a question and answer session. It was a lively and informative presentation and an evening well spent for participants. The CAS officers who helped to organize the meeting are Chair Navneet Jain, Treasurer Weikai Sun, Program Chair Jonathan David, Secretary Ping Chen and Publicity Chair Howard Sun.
